Sagasu is a GNOME tool to find strings in a set of files. The user specifies the search directory and the set of files to be searched. Double-clicking on a search result launches a user command that can for example load the file in an editor at the appropriate line. The search can optionally ignore CVS directories.

Sagasu is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License.

The current version is 2.0.8. It was released on January 20th, 2006. It should be compilable under GNOME 2.12 without modifications to the makefiles.

The interface works with UTF-8, but Sagasu still assumes that the files to be searched are in Latin-1.

The user interface is provided in English, French, Japanese, Serbian, Russian and German versions. The help file is provided in English and French.

Sagasu is a Japanese word that means "to search." You can hear (WAV, 20k) the correct Japanese pronunciation of the word sagasu (my thanks to Andy Cunningham and Yuko Suzuki).

The binary RPM package adds an entry to GNOME's Accessories submenu. It was produced on a Fedora Core 3 system. The installation prefix is /usr.

The source archive contains an RPM .spec file, which allows you to build your own RPM by giving the following command (possibly under the root user):

rpmbuild -tb sagasu-2.0.8.tar.gz

Required Libraries

GNOME 2.8 (or later) is required. Namely, libgnomeui 2.8.0 or later is required.

You also need to have Perl, including the FileHandle, DirHandle, locale and POSIX modules, which normally come with the Perl distribution.
